Local Area Information

Pickering sits on the edge of the North Yorkshire Moors National Park, with beautiful, unspoilt scenery, and excellent walking country. It is also conveniently located within 20 miles of the coast at Whitby and Scarborough, and only 40 minutes drive to York with all its tourist attractions. Castle Howard is 30 minutes away, as is the National Trust's Nunnington Hall and Rievaulx Abbey.
Castlegate, where the cottage is found, is a quiet, friendly residential street conveniently located within 5 minutes walk of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, Pickering Castle, The Beck Isle Museum and many excellent shops, cafes and restaurants.
If you have children, they may enjoy the fantastic new adventure playground on Whitby Road, which is a 10 minute walk from the cottage. Alternatively Dalby Forest is a 15 minute drive away with its own adventure playground as well as excellent cycling and walking routes and Go Ape Tree Top Adventure.
The easiest way to see this beautiful part of North Yorkshire is by car. However, there is of course, the North Yorkshire Moors Railway (usually a steam train) which runs all the way to Whitby with many lovely places to visit on the way. There are also buses running between Helmsley (via Pickering) to Scarborough and from Leeds to Scarborough via York, Malton and Pickering. Northern Rail trains run from nearby Malton (9 miles away) directly to York, Liverpool and Manchester Piccadilly and Manchester airport.
